Chapter 8: “Polarity Thinking™ and Real Time Strategic Change”

As President of Jake Jacobs Consulting, I have been an enthusiastic practitioner of Polarity Thinking™ for more than 25 years. I am a Mastery graduate and the Real Time Strategic Change approach I developed has been a foundational element of the SMALL Process™.

My latest book, Leverage Change: 8 Ways to Achieve Faster, Easier, Better Results features the paradoxical approach to change inherent in Polarity Thinking. The first chapter, “Pay Attention to Continuity” makes the argument that Change and Continuity are a critical polarity that must be leveraged well for all change work to succeed.

Why do some organizations work and others don’t? I’ve been curious about that question since my first real job on the assembly line of an ice cream novelty manufacturing plant and my second, tending bar in college. As a pioneer in the field of large group interventions, I have continued my discoveries about better ways for people and organizations to change.

My consulting, writing, and teaching have all helped me continue in answering that question.

I’ve worked with some of the largest corporations in the world including American Express, Corning, Ford, Marriott, and TJ Maxx. I’ve also supported major change efforts with the City of New York, and the United Kingdom’s National Health and Employment Services.

Writing has been a great way for me to get clearer about what I believe and how I work. In addition to regular postings of my “Jake on Change” video series on LinkedIn, I’ve written for Strategy and Leadership, Executive Excellence, Leader to Leader, the OD Practitioner and been featured in The Huffington Post and Inc. magazine.
